Biomass is a form of renewable and sustainable energy source. Nowadays, the usage of biofuels is still at the early stages, hydrogen being produced almost entirely from fossil fuels and its production may result in very important environmental consequences. Thus, renewable biomass represents an attractive alternative to fossil feedstocks. There is a need to identify a suitable biofuel species, which can provide high-energy output to replace fossil fuels. For economical reasons, the hydrogen production has to be combined with the production of value added by-products.
