The increasingly law attention and the people concern about the proximity of thermal or other process involving combustion, because of micro and macro pollutants (dioxins, furans, ecc…) wants that the managers of these plants gain of an industrial model for the measurement of these micro pollutants also to be able to find correlations between the burned product (waste or other) and the management of the plant.
In this scenario is important to study and implement an instrument related to a sampling method able to measure and sample continuously dioxins (in real-time). The research results can give a great contribution to legislative issue, allowing the legislature to oblige the continuous use of this instrument as is already done for the macro pollutants and a great contribution to industrial sector.
The proposer company is in the environmental sector and in Sicily is a leader in the waste management through his incineration plant. The incineration plant treat port waste and special waste as industrial and hospital waste.
Crucial for the business activity is also the research unit connected with the University where are conducted research to improve the environmental impact.
The project idea stems from the fact that waste incineration is one of several technologies that produce pollutant.
The production of ash (representing approximately 1/3 in weight of incoming waste and must be disposed in special landfills) and the systematic and continuous release in the atmosphere for each incinerator (million cubic metres per day) of fumes pollutants, it is inevitable. In the fumes are present powders of various diameters with increasing danger to health. In the ashes and fumes there are heavy metals (arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, lead, mercury and chromium and other), organic chemical compounds and not organic compounds (Dioxins and furans, CO2, oxides of Z, chloride and fluoride acids, Polychlorinated biphenyls or PCBs and other hundreds of volatile organic substances of which were identified only a 10-14%).
The Dioxin is a proven carcinogen to humans, while the other dioxins/furans are potential carcinogens and they have others and numerous effects on human health.
The methods for measuring dioxins provide control of samples fumes levied at the fireplace. In this way you cannot evaluate the concentration of these compounds unevenly. An optimal solution would be to have a measurement system in real-time, so to monitor these emissions continuously, and connect the type of material incinerated with the amount of dioxins produced.
The project fulfils the need, of the community and of the involved reality, to make a contribution to protect the health of citizens and respect the environment. The possibility of establishing an international partnership is the opportunity to implement a process of technology transfer and skills far-reaching.
